Fashion has always been a form of self-expression for me, a way to capture the essence of who I am.
Over the years, my style has evolved, reflecting the changes in my personal beliefs, values, and experiences. One significant transformation has been my journey towards dressing modestly, a path intertwined with my faith, identity, and a desire for intentional living.
Discovering Personal Style
In my teens and early twenties, I found myself chasing every passing trend, often without considering whether these styles truly resonated with me. It wasn’t until I started my fashion Instagram in 2022 that I began to notice patterns in what I gravitated towards: long skirts, structured coats, button-up blouses, vintage romantic details, a nod to bohemian elegance inspired by my home in Florida, as well as touches of traditional elegance a nod to my east coast roots. These elements made me feel confident and comfortable, unlike the hyper-revealing trends that never quite felt like me.
A Shift in Perspective
As I reconnected with my Jewish heritage, I delved deeper into the concept of Tzniut, or modesty. Contrary to common misconceptions, modesty in Judaism isn’t about hiding oneself or dressing a certain way for others. It’s about dignity, humility, and living with intention. For me its about the inward journey rather than outward appearances.
This understanding led me to question societal narratives that equate empowerment with revealing clothing. I began to see that true empowerment comes from making choices aligned with one’s values, not from conforming to external expectations.
Embracing Modesty
Choosing to dress modestly wasn’t about restriction; it was about alignment with my beliefs and a newfound sense of self-respect. Interestingly, I noticed that people treated me differently, there was a newfound respect and presence in our interactions. For married women, modest dressing can also signify being cared for and taking pride in one’s appearance as a direct reflection of your husband, his care and his affections to you.
Practical Tips for Modest Fashion
Transitioning to a modest wardrobe doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Here are some tips that helped me:
• Start Gradually: Introduce longer skirts and higher-neck tops while phasing out revealing items.
• Layering: Use layers to adapt trendy pieces into modest outfits.
• Fabric Choices: Opt for flowing, structured, and elegant textures to elevate your look.
• Seek Inspiration: Platforms like Pinterest offer a wealth of modest fashion ideas.
• Accessorize: Thoughtful accessories can transform and complete your outfit.
Remember, modest fashion is gaining popularity across various communities, proving that style and modesty can coexist beautifully.
An Ongoing Journey
It’s important to acknowledge that modesty is a personal journey, not a checklist. For instance, I don’t always cover my head, a decision that remains between me and The Almighty. What’s essential is approaching modesty as a mindset that evolves over time.
Above all, it’s crucial not to judge others for their choices in dress. Everyone is on their own path, and what feels right for one person may not for another. The goal is to foster a sense of dignity, empowerment, and authenticity in how we present ourselves.
